Small acts, big impact: Building brighter futures one bike at a time
Publication date: June 2026
For many children, a bicycle represents much more than a way to get from one place to another. It can mean independence, exploration, connection with friends and the freedom to discover something new.
This summer, five Covestro employees helped make that experience possible for children across Southwestern Pennsylvania by volunteering with United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania’s Build-A-Bike initiative.
The Covestro team spent part of their Juneteenth morning in Pittsburgh’s Highland Park neighborhood working alongside other volunteers to assemble bicycles that were later distributed through community organizations serving children throughout the region.
Over the course of three days, volunteers assembled and delivered 600 bikes to local partners, helping put bicycles in the hands of children just in time for summer.
Turning time into opportunity
Bikes assembled during the Juneteenth event were prioritized for distribution through organizations serving Black, Indigenous and other children of color. Bikes assembled during the other volunteer days supported a broader range of children and families experiencing vulnerability across the region.
Build-A-Bike has become one of United Way’s signature volunteer initiatives in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Over the past decade, the program has provided thousands of bicycles, helmets and locks to children across multiple counties.
For Covestro employees, volunteering offered a hands-on opportunity to contribute to an initiative with a direct and lasting impact.
A bicycle can give a child the confidence to explore their neighborhood, spend time with friends or experience a greater sense of independence. Those seemingly simple experiences can help build curiosity, confidence and connection — all important elements of Brighter Minds.
Coming together to make a difference
Covestro’s participation in Build-A-Bike reflects the power of employees coming together to support the communities where they live and work.
Through Brighter Communities, Covestro encourages employees to share their time and talents through meaningful volunteer opportunities that help strengthen communities. Whether assembling a bicycle, supporting a local organization or contributing in other ways, individual acts of service can add up to meaningful change.
That spirit of service is at the heart of Brighter Together — recognizing that lasting community impact is possible when people, organizations and businesses work toward a shared goal.
For the children receiving these bikes, the result is something tangible: a new opportunity to ride, explore and connect.
And for the volunteers who helped build them, it was a reminder that sometimes a few hours, a willing team and a small act of service can help create a much brighter future.
