Sumika Covestro Urethane Co., Ltd. (SCU) ), joint venture between Sumitomo Chemical and Covestro, is responsible for the development of polyurethane raw material business in Japan. The company handles the entire process from material design and development to production and sales in Japan.

SCU was established in 1969 as a joint venture between Sumitomo Chemical Industries (now Sumitomo Chemical) and Bayer AG (whose shares were later transferred to Bayer MaterialScience, now Covestro Japan). As a leading company in Japan’s polyurethane industry, SCU plays a key role in foam solutions and the coatings and adhesives sectors.

SCU’s polyurethane is widely used in major industries such as electronics, automotive, and furniture. It closely collaborates with the Amagasaki Innovation Center and Covestro’s overseas research and development teams in China, ASEAN, the United States, and Europe to provide cutting-edge technological innovations to customers in Japan.

    Dr. Otto Bayer invents polyurethane in Leverkusen, Germany. It takes more than 10 years before industrial production begins

Working at Covestro in Japan

With ca. 400 employees, the Covestro team in Japan is working from six sites, including the Tokyo headquarters, production sites in Niihama, Sakai and Tsukuba, as well as two R&D sites in Amagasaki and Kawasaki.
