Covestro introduced its new range of innovative film solutions for security documents at the 12th Security Document Summit (SDS) in Beijing. Presented for the first time in China, the passport hinge solution Platilon® ID 9122 received particular attention and won the conference’s prestigious Blue Shield Award for Innovation. The product enables the secure integration of polycarbonate-based data pages into next generation e-passports, a major trend in the security document industry. The latest polycarbonate film innovation by Covestro for the security document data page, Makrofol® ID 332 Superlaser, was therefore also a hot topic.
To meet the many different demands of governments, card and passport manufacturers in fighting counterfeiting and making personal identifies more secure, Covestro has developed a range of polycarbonate films under the Makrofol® and Bayfol® brands and the Platilon® range of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) films. Passport hinge solution
“Multi-layer TPU film Platilon® ID 9122 can excellently bond with polycarbonate and ensures the data page cannot be delaminated without destruction of the passport,” said Markus Mingenbach, Director and Regional Head of Specialty Films business at Covestro in Asia Pacific. “At the same time, fabric-like properties of TPU enable unlimited bends without appearance of cracks or breaks.” The melt behavior and flexibility of TPU are ideally suited to protect integrated chips and antennas. The material can be securely sewn into passport using existing standard methods.
Further security features can be integrated
On request, Platilon® ID products can also be equipped with laser-reactive properties to integrate further security features into the fold. As with the polycarbonate data pages, it can also be personalized using standard laser engraving equipment.
The thickness of the layers in the composite films, which is thinner than for individual films, also enables greater design freedom. The data page can thus also be made thinner without sacrificing its excellent strength and flexibility. This simplifies the integration of security features, and the thinner data page also saves money.
Contrast-rich and secure personalization
For high security cards and e-passport data pages, Covestro also showcased the polycarbonate film Makrofol® ID Superlaser at SDS 2017. Using this product, the holder’s data and photo can be laser-engraved in higher contrast into the ID document than is possible for standard laser-reactive overlay films. The data are also integrated into the core, such that the film also offers better anti-forgery protection.
Personalization is faster and more cost-effective with Makrofol® ID 332 Superlaser than with conventional production. The development of this film and the patent-protected Superlaser technology is the response of Covestro to the latest trends on the security document market.
Ultra-thin film makes chip invisible
Other innovations shown at SDS 2017 included extremely thin white polycarbonate films in the Makrofol® ID range. Thanks to their excellent opacity, they ensure the chip and antenna cannot be seen. The thin layer of just 30 or 50 micrometers also offers more opportunities to incorporate additional layers in the card.About Covestro:
