“Inventing Beauty Solutions for You” was the theme of Covestro at PCHi 2016 during March 1 to 3, 2016, in Shanghai. (Booth No. M02) Covestro, the innovator in multifunctional polymers, presented its advanced Polyurethane (PU) film former technology for new generation of skin care products, sunscreens, hair care products and decorative cosmetics. The bright and modern new identity “Beauty made possible” and inspirational onsite experience center attracted lots of formulators and researchers to the stand and generated much interest for future beauty solutions, formulated with star brand Baycusan®.
Dr. Paula Rodrigues, Head of Cosmetics at Covestro, introduced: “Raw materials based on the advanced polyurethane film former technology are one essential enabler to develop new generation of skincare and sun care products in Asia market. The key features of the technology are safe and suitable for sensitive skins. With over 75 year experience in PU technology, Covestro is the innovation partner of choice for future polymer solutions, with many possibilities in new functionalities and sustainability.”
Free your skin from air pollution (PM2.5)
Air pollution is one of the most challenging problems in the world. With regards, to beauty, air pollution stresses young and healthy skin. Addressing the emerging needs of anti-pollution effect for beauty solutions, especially in Asia market, Covestro has developed formulations based on Baycusan® C1004 (INCI: Polyurethane-35) for a new generation of skincare and decorative cosmetic products. As the polyurethane raw material forms an invisible film on skin with good air permeability, it can be added to the cosmetics to protect the skin from pollutants (PM2.5) through an invisible barrier.
Particle pollution, or particulate matter (PM), is a mixture of solids and liquid droplets floating in the air. Fine particles with 2.5 micrometers in diameter or smaller (PM 2.5) are produced from all types of combustion and consequently pollute the air. Covestro´s PM 2.5 solution based on PU technology is superior to traditional anti-pollution solutions. Once applied, the skin is provided a protective barrier to keep pore clean and skin safe. Polyurethane invisible film, combined with other ingredients in the product, forms the sense of smooth skin feeling and provides a clean and gentle environment for the skin. Polyurethane-35 is registered in Chinese market. This technology is granted the Technology Innovation Award under functional raw material category by PCHi 2016.
“Covestro’s breakthrough patented innovation in anti-pollution beauty solutions, using Polyurethane-35 , can effectively reduce the air pollutants’ (PM2.5) adsorption and adhesion on the skin, and thus protect the skin from the harm of air pollutants, "said Peter Xiong, Technical Manager of Cosmetics at Covestro.
New polymer for transparent sun protection and innovative textures
Highly effective sun protection cosmetics that give skin a silky feel are in greater demand than ever. Consumers want transparent sunscreens in spray or gel form, because they can be spread over the skin more easily than lotions and form an invisible, but effective film. With the new, ethanol-based polyurethane film former Baycusan® C 2000 (Polyurethane-64), Covestro has developed precisely the right product to meet these requirements.
Just a small amount of this raw material added to sunscreen formulations significantly increases the sun protection factor in in vivo tests, showing an SPF-boosting effect. Consumers benefit from its high waterproof property, which is maintained even after repeated dips in the water. The formulations dry quickly, leaving skin feeling fantastic, and what’s more: They can be applied on wet skin.
Baycusan® C 2000 can easily be incorporated into different sunscreen textures such as gels, aerosol sprays and oils, and is compatible with common UV protection agents. Manufacturers save time, energy and money compared to other film formers, because they do not have to heat or neutralize the products.
With its exceptional sensory properties, Baycusan® makes a tangible difference in sun protection products. Several formulations containing the polyurethane solution have been presented at PCHi in Shanghai.
