Covestro (formerly Bayer MaterialScience) , a global leader in high-tech materials solutions, has been awarded the Blue Shield Innovation Award 2015 in the field of security identification. The award was given at the 10th Security Document Summit for outstanding anti-counterfeiting measures in Beijing by the Security Identification Union which was affiliated by the Chinese International Association for Promotion of Science and Technology (CIAPST).
Thanks to Makrofol® ID Superlaser film, a transparent polycarbonate film, passports or cards can now be laser-engraved with the holder’s data and photo in higher contrast than is possible with standard laser-reactive overlay films. The high laser light absorption of the film ensures that other security features of the card, such as colors visible under UV light or holograms, are subject to less thermal stress during the laser engraving process. Furthermore, there is hardly any degassing or blistering while the documents are being personalized, which minimizes rejects. This fact is an advantage for the thin passports that are currently in vogue, because they can be personalized more securely, faster and therefore more cost-efficiently. Overall the film is particularly well suited for the production of forgery-proof passports, ID cards and driver's licenses.
“China is one of the most important strategic markets for Covestro, given its growth perspective and the changing nature to being an innovation driven industry. Close customer relationships and long-term R&D collaborations have become the key to our success over the years. In future, we will continue to invest in R&D facilities to grow together with customers as we position ourselves for more innovative technologies and solutions in China,” said Joerg Ottmann, Director and Regional Head for Covestro’s Specialty Films business in APAC.
The Blue Shield Innovation Award was the second win in a row for Covestro, former Bayer MaterialScience. In 2014 it received an award for contributing to the fight against counterfeiting as a “foreign-investment enterprise with significant presence in the Chinese market”.
Compared with traditional materials like PVC and PETG, Covestro’s PC film solution excels in excellent mechanical properties and unique security functionality. The film can perfectly protect chips integrated into the core of cards and secure personal information against manipulation and forgery. ID cards manufactured with the films won’t delaminate in its life span of over 10 years thanks to its ultra-durability, good abrasion resistance and long-term flexural strength. Moreover, PC is more eco-friendly than traditional polymer materials.
